Although the terms "essential oil" and "fragrant oil" are used interchangeably, they are different. Quite simply put, essential oils are gotten naturally, extracted from plants, flowers, leaves, stems, roots, and barks of trees. Essential oils provide many health benefits including protection from bacteria and viruses, or pain relief. Meanwhile, fragrant oils are artificial oils, and carry no health benefits.
What Are Essential Oils?
Essential oils are naturally occurring substances found in different parts of plants - leaves, stems, bark, flowers, resin, etc. the blossom, fruit, leaf, stem, bark, wood or resin, etc. through steam distillation or solvent extraction, essential oils and hydrosols are produced.
What Are Essential Oils Used For?
Pure essential oils are used for their health benefits, whether it be physical, emotional or mental health. They enter the body through the skin (by massage or applying topically or the olfactory system (by a diffuser or steam inhalation). They help with pain relief, assist in fighting off flu or cold symptoms, work in battling depression or insomnia, not to mention other remedies.
What Are Fragrant Oils?
Fragrant oils are man-made or manufactured scents. They are specifically designed to mimic the scent of a natural product (such as peach or chocolate) The range of scents is extensive; from flowers, to candy, to fruit, to the smell of rain. You get the idea. If you are looking for a fragrant oil, it's best to select ones without the use of parabens.
What Are Fragrance Oils Used For?
Fragrance oils are used primarily in the manufacturing of soaps, lotions and perfumes. They are purchased on the merit of scent alone, as they carry no health benefits.
Both essential oils and fragrant oils have their own uses, however, for therapeutic purposes, it's best to stick with pure essential oils. But if you're looking for a sweet smelling cake scent, go with fragrant - just don't expect to fight off a cold with it!
